TAIMWAS

AI-assisted chronic wound analysis from a smartphone.

Overview

Chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, pressure sores and venous leg ulcers, affect millions of patients in the UK and put a growing load on the NHS. Assessment is still mostly done by eye, often by community nurses with very little time, and the results vary between clinicians. TAIMWAS is an Innovate UK funded research project that brings AI-assisted wound analysis into that routine using only a smartphone camera.

What it does

A clinician, or in self-care settings the patient, photographs the wound. TAIMWAS gives an objective measure of the wound and shows how it is changing between visits, as a second opinion that supports the clinician's own judgement. It is designed to fit into existing care routines, to work across different patients and settings, and to keep patient data private.

Current status

The Innovate UK funded phase of TAIMWAS is complete. We are now developing a minimum viable product (MVP) based on the research, with a view to commercialisation.

Outcome
