Digital solutions built on research and evidence.
Smartifier was founded in 2022 to apply AI and security research to real business problems. Three Innovate UK funded projects, in healthcare, sustainability and cybersecurity, have shaped how we work. We now offer that experience to businesses across the United Kingdom.
What we do
We work in two ways. As consultants, we help you decide whether a digital solution is right for your business. As builders, we develop it ourselves: AI agents and chatbots, automation, multi-agent systems and secure systems for sensitive settings. See Services for the full list.
Our principles
Working systems come first.
You should end up with something that works. The main deliverable is a running system in your own codebase, on your own infrastructure. We write a report as well, but it is short and it comes second.
Research rigour, commercial pace.
Our three Innovate UK funded projects, in healthcare, sustainability and cybersecurity, taught us to build systems that stand up to scrutiny. Working with commercial clients has taught us to deliver them in weeks rather than quarters. We try to keep both habits.
Honest about what AI can do.
It is easy to build an AI system that looks convincing and then fails in daily use. If an LLM is not the right tool for your problem, we will tell you, even if that means we do not take the work. Where we do use one, we build in monitoring so you can see its limits for yourself.
Security from the start.
Threat modelling, secrets management, audit logging and access control go in with the first commit, not at the end of the project. We treat security as part of how we build, not as a separate service added afterwards.
Your code, your infrastructure.
Everything we build goes into a repository you own, running on infrastructure you control. We do not tie clients to a platform that only we can operate. If you keep working with us, we want it to be because the work is good.
How we work
A typical engagement has three stages.
A one-week diagnostic.
We spend time with your team and review your data, existing systems and security. We then write a short technical brief that sets out what is worth building and what is not. The brief is yours to keep, whether or not we go further together.
A build of four to twelve weeks.
A small team, usually two or three people from Smartifier and our specialist technical bench, builds the smallest version of the system that works properly. The code is in your repository from day one.
Handover or ongoing support.
We train your team to look after the system, or we run it for you on a fixed monthly retainer. There is no lock-in either way.
Where we work
United Kingdom
Based in Stockton-on-Tees. Our main point of contact for UK and EU clients, including Innovate UK and Horizon Europe collaborations.
Funding and partners
Smartifier has been awarded three Innovate UK grants since 2022, with a combined project value of £435,000. The funded phases of TAIMWAS and NetZeroFyer are complete, and an MVP of each is now in development. The third, D-PLUS, received the highest assessment score in its funding call, one of 41 projects funded from 164 assessed applications. It begins in October 2026. Details of each project are on the R&D page.
We work with Teesside University and New City College London, and our projects are funded by Innovate UK.
